Why Use a Change Readiness Assessment Tool?

In my practice most people tell me "what" they want to achieve or change. But without first understanding the "why", the "how", and the "who", even the best intentions can fail. Over many years I've realised that true readiness for change is far more important for success than willpower alone. A structured change readiness assessment tool helps you identify your strengths and your blind spots before you invest time, energy, and emotion into your change effort.

In my experience I've noticed that people often underestimate emotional and environmental factors when preparing for change. For example, I remember one client who worked for, and accepted, a management promotion, but seriously underestimated how colleagues related to him differently in his new position. This tool makes those factors visible and it brings the detail of psychological research that is usually applied to coaching, therapy, leadership development and organisational change management for you to use in a simple, accessible format.

What the Assessment Measures

The assessment evaluates your readiness across five evidence-based psychological domains:

  • Awareness & Insight: Do you clearly understand why you want to change and what's keeping you stuck? Without genuine insight, even motivated people can find themselves going in circles.

  • Motivation & Desire: Is this change something you truly want for yourself, or are you acting on external pressure? Intrinsic motivation is one of the most reliable drivers of sustained change.

  • Confidence & Self-Efficacy: Do you believe you are capable of making this change? Self-efficacy, your belief in your own ability, is one of the strongest psychological predictors of success.

  • Planning & Preparedness: Do you have a clear idea of your first steps? Good intentions without a plan often lead to procrastination. This domain assesses whether you're ready to act, not just reflect.

  • Support & Environment: Do the people and environment around you make it easier or harder to change? External conditions matter enormously, and this domain helps you identify whether your surroundings are working for or against you.

I believe that motivation and desire are essential for successful change, but I pay attention to all of these factors when I work with people in change, whether they’re changing careers, habits, or relationships.

The Psychology Behind the Tool

This assessment is grounded in four well-established psychological frameworks:

The Stages of Change Model (Prochaska & DiClemente)
Originally developed to understand how people overcome addiction, this model maps change across five stages: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The questions in this tool are designed to identify which stage you are currently in, so your results and recommendations are stage-appropriate.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Developed by psychologists William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MI highlights the role of ambivalence (wanting change and wanting things to stay the same), importance (how meaningful or valuable the change feels to you), and confidence (your belief in your ability to make that change happen) in the change process. The motivation and awareness questions in this tool draw directly on MI principles. You can read more about Motivational Interviewing at the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

Self-Efficacy Theory (Bandura)
Albert Bandura's research established that a person's belief in their own capability is one of the most powerful predictors of behaviour change. Three questions in this tool directly measure your perceived self-efficacy.

Environmental & Social Support Models
Change does not happen in a vacuum. Your relationships, your physical environment, and your social context all influence your ability to change. The support domain reflects this evidence base.

Frequently Asked Questions

A change readiness assessment tool is a structured questionnaire that measures how prepared a person is psychologically, emotionally and practically to make a significant change. It evaluates key factors such as motivation, self-belief, clarity, planning, and social support, and provides personalised feedback to help you understand where you are in the change process and what you need to focus on next.
This assessment is designed for anyone who is considering a personal or professional change. It could be a career transition, a health or lifestyle change, ending or beginning a relationship, relocating, starting a business, or any other meaningful shift. It is also used by coaches, therapists, and counsellors as a starting point for working with clients on change-related goals. I’ve seen how powerful it is when people understand where they are in the change process. This tool gives you the same starting point that I use in my practice.
The assessment takes approximately two minutes to complete. There are 15 questions in total, each answered on a simple 1–5 scale. Results are displayed instantly - there is no waiting and no email address is required.
Yes. The assessment runs entirely within your browser. Your answers and results are not stored, transmitted, or shared with anyone. No account or email address is required to take the assessment.
The assessment places you in one of three categories based on your total score. Low Readiness (15–34) suggests that important foundations, such as clarity, motivation, or confidence, are still developing, and that reflection and preparation are the most helpful next steps. Moderate Readiness (35–54) indicates that you have a reasonable foundation but specific gaps need to be addressed before you'll feel fully ready to act. High Readiness (55–75) means that your awareness, motivation, confidence, planning, and support are well-aligned, and that you are in a strong position to begin taking consistent action.
Yes. You can retake the assessment as many times as you like using the "Retake Assessment" button on the results page. Many people find it useful to retake it after working on a specific area such as building confidence or strengthening their support network to track how their readiness has shifted over time.
Your results page includes a personalised action plan with five suggested next steps tailored to your readiness category, as well as a domain breakdown showing which of the five areas are strongest and which need the most attention. Use this as a starting point and focus on one or two areas at a time rather than trying to address everything at once. I find it valuable if people share these results with me so, if you are working with a coach or therapist, sharing your results with them can be a valuable way to begin or deepen your work together.
